A Simple Suggestion [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-18 A stupid waste of construction materials I am an American citizen who lives in Canada and winters in Mexico. (NorthSouth!) And I drive between, so I cross the US/Mexico border at least twice annually. I want all the nations and people of our three nations to thrive and happily coexist. It shouldn't be that difficult. The immigration and southern border situation is forever a hot topic and wedge issue for the right wing. It costs Dem votes in critical places. Nobody wants "open borders", immigrants taking US jobs, or the crime associated with human smuggling at the border. People do want lettuce picked, landscapes tended, children and elders cared for, or lots of other services that could be offered by low wage immigrants. So my proposal is simple and so obvious that I fail to understand why it isn't our policy. We need an appropriate guest worker program. A source of legal employees and employment. Take the illegal out of illegal immigration. Control it, collect taxes, etc. Provide a very long term path to eventual green card status and later citizenship. Maybe there are different paths for seasonal, limited (5 year?), and permanent status. Legal employees, making a fair minimum wage are not a threat to US job seekers. The reward is gone for human smuggling. Mexico and central American countries have money returned. ( By the way the best way to reduce immigration from the south is to improve the quality of life and security of life in those nations.) Please comment if you know a good reason why this policy wouldn't work or with suggestions for improvements.
