Biden in consultation with Ukraine should match Xi's initiative [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-18 U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the margins of the Group of Twenty (G20) gathering in Bali, Indonesia, November 14, 2022. China has announced it will present its proposal for ending the conflict in Ukraine by the end of this month: China to unveil peace initiative for Ukraine and Russia this month, says Beijing’s foreign minister February 18, 2023, 09:53 AM “In the document, we will reiterate the proposals made by Chinese President Xi Jinping, including the need to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty, to abide by the purpose and principles of the UN Charter, to take seriously legitimate security concerns, and to support all efforts that contribute to a peaceful settlement.” This is an opportunity for the US and China to establish a dialog on the elements of peace and come to an understanding of each other's positions on the elements of peace. Many of the issues facing Russia and Ukraine are also facing the US, China and many other countries that are in competition for limited resources. There is no better way to negotiate these issues than in third party representations. The UN is powerless in dealing with these issues, if China and the US can come to an understanding of how to deal with these issues even if it does not end the conflict in Ukraine it will be well worth the effort. If the China-US relationship ever reaches the point of violence between them, there is no power on earth to harness the aggression that may result from it. The rest of the world will be left to chose sides or sit on the side lines and hope they come out of this in a sustainable fashion. Public statements attributed to Xi and Biden indicate that there is much the two agree on, their differences' lye, mostly in the areas that they compete in head to head. Between Xi and Biden, they are influential over a vast majority of the 193 members of the UN and could pass a massive overhaul of the institution, including its peace keeping efforts and member accountability. Third party negotiations of peace in Ukraine between the US and China with Russia and Ukraine veto is a win for Russia and Ukraine, a win for China and the US and a win for world peace no matter the outcome in Ukraine. Both Xi and Biden have the temperament to agree to disagree if necessary. So, President Biden, why not match Xi’s pledge to publish China’s proposed path to peace in Ukraine with the US’ proposal to do the same. There’s likely to be more agreement than the world expects.
