Visiting Georgia, in search of President Jimmy Carter [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-18 President Jimmy Carter's home property, Plains Ga, Feb. 14, 2023 I toured the Carter Center last week, and went to Plains, Ga to see President Jimmy Carter’s origins as well. My visit would have been different after the announcement of him starting home hospice. I’ve long been an admirer of President Jimmy Carter. Since my youth, when he ran for President. It was disappointing that he lost to Governor Ronald Regan in 1980. After that loss I paid attention to Jimmy Carter’s global peace efforts and charitable efforts throughout Africa. When I started to work, I started to make small donations to his Carter Center peace efforts. In the tradition of all our presidential and social heroes, I was interested in a pilgrimage to see his library at the Carter Center. And also, if I could, to make a trip to Plains, Georgia, to see something of his beginnings. Family in Georgia gave me the opportunity and reason to travel there, and so Tuesday, February 14th, 2023, I traveled to the Carter Center and made a visit. I saw the biographical film, and his Nobel Peace Prize medal and a lifetime of memorabilia, as well as displays of the work the center is doing now. In the field is the famous statue of a river blindness adult being led by a seeing child with a stick. I’ve often seen that image in his charitable center publicity. When finished visiting, I asked the guard about getting to the Martin Luther King park/memorial that was nearby. “Just take the path, from the other side of the parking lot.” So I walked the mile or so down to the MLK tomb, and museum, and paid my respects and walked back to my car. It was a pleasant spring afternoon. After seeing the Carter Center, I drove down to Plains, Ga (renting a Tesla Model 3 EV — nice). In Plains I toured the high school Carter attended. The high school was slightly older than my high school, and the fittings were only slightly older than I had grown up with. Then I went to see his childhood home a few miles away. It was closed but the grounds were still open. I spoke with the docents. On my way out of Plains, I drove again past the Carter home property (the image above). I’m glad I got to see all this before he announced his health progress. It would have been more of a sad pilgrimage if I’d known how far he was along. This way, it still seemed to me that he was active. A good man, having reached his end. I salute President James Earl Carter for a life well lived.
