Have a fabulous weekend .... and week ahead (even better if Monday is a holiday for you). ART NOTES — an exhibition entitled Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance — a father of the Renaissance, cited as an influence on Michelangelo and Raphael and whose works are seldom seen outside of Italy — will be at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, England to June 11th. Saint Rossore, circa 1424-1427 FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER — development of an open-cut coal mine in Australia was halted on environmental grounds, with the Labor Party declaring the site in question being too close to the Great Barrier Reef. YOUR WEEKEND READ is this summary by the redoubtable Digby — on how right-wing efforts to punish investment firms with socially-conscious policies … are having some negative consequences. THURSDAY's CHILD — the Chief Mouser at #10 Downing Street ………. x It’s has been a pleasure to serve you all for these last 12 years. If you’re ever asked if you have a cat, but don’t have the joy of one at home, know that you can answer yes; because I am yours and always will be x (Pic @PjrFoto) pic.twitter.com/ssFRpWlumB — Larry the Cat (@Number10cat) February 15, 2023 …. and says (in noting that he has outlasted five prime ministers) — "I live here permanently …. politicians are temporary residents." MUSIC NOTES — Rolling Stone has compiled a list entitled 50 Genuinely Horrible Albums by Brilliant Artists — including The Who, Velvet Underground, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Carole King, Billy Joel, Grateful Dead, Willie Nelson, the Kinks, Prince, Joni Mitchell, Run-DMC and Neil Young — attributed to artists owing their record company an album, substance abuse, too many personnel changes and trying to break-into a music genre they weren’t meant for, among many other reasons. IN A BREAK from the calendar used by Russian orthodoxy: the Ukrainian Greek Catholic church (with 10% of Ukraine’s population) will shift the celebration of some feast days (modified Julian calendar) to match those of Christians in the West. Its Christmas Day will now fall on Dec. 25th instead of Jan. 7th. FRIDAY's CHILD is named, appropriately enough, Lucky the Cat — a Florida kitteh who went missing two years ago but will be reunited with his family (due to his microchip) after being found …. in Kansas. Lucky (indeed) the Cat BRAIN TEASER — try this Quiz of the Week's News from the BBC ...… and the usually easier, less UK-centered New York Times quiz. HAIL and FAREWELL to the film star Stella Stevens — Girls, Girls, Girls (1963), The Nutty Professor (1963) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972) — who has died at the age of eighty-four … and David Oreck, founder of his eponymous vacuum cleaner firm (who featured in his own ads) who has died at the age of ninety-nine. OLDER-YOUNGER BROTHERS? — current assistant US Attorney General Jonathan Kanter and …. ummm .... the embattled new congressman from New York state. Jonathan Kanter (b. 1973) George Santos? (b. 1988 ?) ...... and finally, for a song of the week ...........................… continuing a look at songwriters whose work I do not always care for — yet have success in many genres — is Tom Snow, whose work has been performed by those ranging from Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Little Feat and the late Selena. He has earned nominations for the EGOT (Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tonys) and when you recognize some of his songs … you’ll see why (when his group/solo career did not take off) he found his calling as a songwriter. Born in Princeton, New Jersey in 1947, as an eighteen year-old Tom Snow was briefly in a band (called The Like) with Gram Parsons, and after graduating from the Berklee College of Music became a member of a band called simply Country — which released one album in 1971 (though with management problems, there was little promotion) yet featured a guest spot by Lowell George (of Little Feat). Tom Snow went on to release two solo albums in the 1970’s (and one more in 1982 at the request of Clive Davis) yet found more success writing for others. Among the songs he either wrote (or co-wrote): He’s So Shy — the Pointer Sisters (#3 in 1980) Don’t Call it Love — Dolly Parton Love Sneakin’ Up on You — Bonnie Raitt (#19 in 1994) More than Fascination — Dionne Warwick Good for Me — Amy Grant (#8 in 1992) Dreaming of You — Selena (#22 in 1995, released posthumously) Let’s Hear It for the Boy — Deniece Williams (#1 in 1984) If Ever You’re in My Arms Again — Peabo Bryson (#10 in 1984) You Should Hear How She Talks About You — Melissa Manchester (#5 in 1982) He has written for the stage (notably, for the musical theater version of Footloose, with a 1999 Tony nomination), for film (a Best Song Oscar nomination for “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” in 1984) and TV (with a primetime Emmy nomination for Fame — L.A. in 1997) and in 2000 received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Berklee school. In addition to the musicians listed above: has had his songs performed by Diana Ross, Rita Coolidge, Cher, Christina Aguilera, Joe Cocker, Olivia Newton-John and Kenny Rogers. Small wonder that he was a nominee for this year’s Songwriters Hall of Fame induction … and while unsuccessful this time: based upon his work, I hope he gets it someday. Tom Snow in 1975 ……... … and more recently (at 75) Easily my favorite song of his is one that he co-wrote with the legendary husband-and-wife songwriting team of Barry Mann-Cynthia Weil. Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville won a Grammy for Best Vocal Performance by a Pop Group or Duo for Don’t Know Much — which reached #2 on the charts in 1989.
