But those guys had nothing on the propaganda that parades as news at @FoxNews . The fox guys have a choice. And they make the wrong choice every single time, every single day https://t.co/cwGOJ5puEu — Martina Navratilova (@Martina) February 20, 2023 C/NET The future of online speech is in the hands of the US Supreme Court. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments in two high-profile cases involving Google, Twitter and Facebook that could reshape how people use the internet and what they can post online. Both cases stem from lawsuits brought by relatives of people killed in terrorist attacks, alleging that the social media companies are liable for the harmful content that appears on their platforms. At stake are questions about whether these online platforms should be held legally responsible for content created by their users but promoted by the companies' algorithms. Tech companies have successfully fought back against these types of lawsuits because of protections they receive under a 27-year-old federal law. BBC It was an audacious trip almost unheard of for a US president. Appearing in a war zone under regular attack, White House officials describe Joe Biden's unexpected visit to Ukraine's capital Kyiv as "unprecedented in modern times". They say previous presidential trips to wartime Iraq and Afghanistan had the back up of a heavy US military presence. And despite widespread speculation among the press corps that Mr Biden might be planning a trip to Ukraine while he was in Poland, the visit still took everyone completely by surprise. The sight of him appearing beside President Volodymyr Zelensky in the heart of Kyiv and under the sound of air raid sirens, makes a louder statement than anything he can say in a speech in Poland. BBC Three people have died after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey on Monday, weeks after a deadly quake devastated the region. More than 680 people have been injured in Turkey and Syria. Turkey's disaster and emergency agency Afad said the tremor occurred at 20:04 local time (17:04 GMT), followed by dozens of aftershocks. A 7.8-magnitude quake struck the same area on 6 February, killing more than 44,000 people in Turkey and Syria. Those killed by Monday's tremor were found in Antakya, Defne, and Samandagi, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said, urging people not to enter potentially dangerous buildings. NPR If you're traveling across the U.S. this week, you might feel summer in one spot and winter in another: The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures hitting record highs and lows, while a huge winter storm "will plague a large portion of the country." Some areas will see both extremes. After warming up to nearly 80 degrees on Thursday, the Washington, D.C., region will fall below freezing late Friday, with snow and rain likely on Saturday, the NWS says. Many places also will see strong winds. The weather agency said on Monday that "confidence is high that this winter storm will be extremely disruptive to travel, infrastructure, livestock, and recreation in affected areas." NPR A woman who says the wind talks to her and put forth claims of election fraud in the 2020 presidential race that she admitted were "pretty wackadoodle" turns out to be a key source of allegations that Fox News presented, night after night, to millions of viewers late that fall. Joe Biden's victory caused Fox News personalities to all but melt down on the air. Off the air, a sense of crisis pervaded the private conversations of the network's executives and stars. Viewers who supported then-President Donald Trump abandoned Fox in droves after its Election Night team became the first in the nation to project that Biden would win the pivotal state of Arizona. Reuters MILAN, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Weeks of dry winter weather have raised concerns that Italy could face another drought after last summer's emergency, with the Alps having received less than half of their normal snowfall, according to scientists and environmental groups. The warning comes as Venice, where flooding is normally the primary concern, faces unusually low tides that are making it impossible for gondolas, water taxis and ambulances to navigate some of its famous canals. Reuters SEOUL, Feb 20 (Reuters) - North Korea launched two more ballistic missiles off its east coast on Monday, with the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un saying North Korea's use of the Pacific as a "firing range" would depend on the behaviour of U.S. forces. The launches come just two days after North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile(ICBM) into the sea off Japan's west coast, prompting the United States to hold joint air exercises with South Korea and separately with Japan on Sunday. The Guardian, Australia Upholding Qantas’s decision to sack staff ahead of industrial action would create “uncertainty” about accessing workplace rights and water down protections against other forms of discrimination, such as sacking workers before they accrue parental leave. That is the submission of the Transport Workers’ Union in the airline’s high court case seeking to overturn the finding that it illegally outsourced 1,700 ground handler jobs. The Guardian, UK Deep spilts over LGBT+ rights have emerged between the two leading candidates vying to replace Nicola Sturgeon as first minister of Scotland. The finance minister, Kate Forbes – who returned early from maternity leave on Monday to declare her bid for leadership of the SNP – told reporters in a round of interviews that she would not challenge the UK government’s block on Holyrood’s gender recognition reform bill, did not support self-identification for trans people and would not have voted for same-sex marriage. On the first full day of campaigning in the six-week contest prompted by Sturgeon’s unexpected resignation last week, Forbes’ pronouncements stood in direct contrast to those of the health secretary, Humza Yousaf, who emerged as frontrunner and picked up a fist of endorsements from senior party figures after initial bookmakers’ favourite, the culture secretary, Angus Robertson, ruled himself out of the race. The Guardian, US Document makes clear senior Fox News figures knew after 2020 election voter fraud claims were false – and it’s likely a landmark case The Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe said Dominion Voting Systems’ brief requesting summary judgment against Fox News for defamation – and $1.6bn – is “likely to succeed and likely to be a landmark” in the history of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. “I have never seen a defamation case with such overwhelming proof that the defendant admitted in writing that it was making up fake information in order to increase its viewership and its revenues,” Tribe told the Guardian. “Fox and its producers and performers were lying as part of their business model. The Guardian, UK enior police officers, families of shooting victims and anti-gun campaigners have called for a “radical reform” of the firearms licensing system after an inquest jury found “catastrophic” failings allowed the Plymouth gunman, Jake Davison, to legally possess a shotgun that he used to kill five people. Pressure is mounting on the UK government to overhaul the 50-year-old licensing legislation and ensure police forces are adequately funded to allow them to fully examine the suitability of gun owners. Speaking after the inquest, relatives of his victims described the actions of Davison, who was fascinated with “incel” culture , previous mass shootings and serial murderers, as “pure evil” but said he had been given a “licence to kill” by Devon and Cornwall police . They also argued that the home secretary, Suella Braverman, would be “betraying” them if she did not change the system.
