Despite all their chicanery, right-wing traitors have largely failed. Joe Biden remains our duly elected president, the so-called red tsunami failed to materialize in 2022, and Democrats maintain control of the Senate. Voters defying the odds, waiting in line for hours, and facing down intimidation shows our country’s tenacity, but a functioning democracy should not demand that voters persevere in an antagonistic system.

House Democrats made history by passing the For the People Act in 2019—the most comprehensive set of democracy reforms passed in a generation. It provided easier voter registration, more early voting, campaign finance reform, an end to gerrymandering, and rooting out corruption in Washington, D.C. That historic legislation was stalled, filibustered, reintroduced, and diluted, but a strong bill remained: The John R. Lewis Freedom to Vote Act.

The Freedom to Vote Act passed quickly in the Democratic-controlled House but was again dead on arrival in the Senate. That is simply unacceptable. Our Democratic leaders owe voters the same fervor and willingness to defy the odds. They owe us federal voting rights protections.
