Photo Diary: Some Critters and Birdies Seen Lately [1]

Florida has a wonderful diversity of wildlife (at least in those places that we haven’t yet paved over for condos and parking lots), and I can pretty much take a walk on any given day and see at least a dozen different species.

So, here are some critters and birdies encountered recently. Most of them are species that I don’t really see very often.

For those who don't know, I live in a converted campervan and travel around the country, posting photo diaries of places that I visit. I am currently wintering in Florida.

Found this little guy in my living room. Mediterranean Gecko.

Grey Catbird. I hear them more often than I see them.

Red-Shouldered Hawks are the most common here, so any hawk I see is a “Red-Shouldered” until I hear otherwise. But this one looks like a Red-Tailed Hawk.

Cattle Egret. They’re not rare, but for some reason I haven’t seen one in a while.

Teals are winter visitors here. I don’t see them very often.

Wood Ducks. I see the females every once in a while, but I haven’t seen a male in a long long time.

They are spectacular birdies

Merganser. I don’t see these often either.

Black-Headed Nanday Parakeet

Alligator Gar

Tri-Color Heron and lunch

I only rarely see Canada Geese here, but they always strut around like they own the place

Moorhens use their comically-huge feet to walk around on water plants
