Arizona AG faces investigations by State Bar and Gov's Office for burying election fraud report [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-25 "There was no 2020 election fraud. We know that. But all of the 2022 Arizona candidates are election deniers and I'm sucking up to Trump for a 2024 US Senate race, so I'll bury the truth and invent some fraud." The other night I wrote that former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich had buried the results of his office’s report into the countless 2020 election conspiracy claims in the state. More than 60 of the AG’s investigators spent 10,000 hours tracking down every claim of election fraud, and they found nothing that would’ve changed the result. Well-known deniers like Mark Finchem and Wendy Rogers were invited to present the evidence they’d been crowing about in the media. They presented nothing other than rumors. Brnovich chose not to reveal this information, however. Instead, he issued a report that suggested there may have been tampering, even though his own investigators told him to his face that the election was fair and the rumors and conspiracies were just that—fantasy talk. The AG’s lying report played into the conspiratorial hands of election deniers running for office and others demanding a Maricopa County “audit” (which found that Biden won the county by even more votes). You see, the 2022 midterms were approaching and every single Republican at the top of the ticket was a vocal election denier: Governor-Lake, US Senator-Masters, Attorney General-Hamadeh, Secretary of State-Finchem. For most of them the 2020 stolen election was their platform, not to mention their key fundraising pitch, so the AG’s finding that there was no fraud, which Brnovich knew well ahead of the midterms, certainly would not have helped their campaigns. So he did not disclose it. Another reason he kept the report hidden is that Brnovich was planning a 2024 US Senate run, when he’d need Trump’s endorsement. So he certainly did not want to piss off the orange goober who had endorsed every one of Arizona’s election-denying candidates, even telling Blake Masters he should only run on stolen election bullshit. Masters and the other deniers all lost, and that includes Brnovich, whose 2024 Senate bid went kersplat. If there was any doubt ... Yesterday news broke that a handful of charges have been filed against Mark Brnovich at the State Bar of Arizona, requesting that he be disbarred, although the stories do not say who brought the charges: Former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich faces potential threats to his law license after the release of documents showing the two-term Republican concealed his own investigators' findings that debunked fellow Republicans' claims of election fraud. Eight Bar charges have been filed against Brnovich in the last two days, according to the State Bar of Arizona. Today, The Washington Post reports that Gov. Katie Hobbs also sent a letter to the State Bar of Arizona requesting an investigation into the AG’s “likely unethical conduct.” Ya think? Brnovich had announced the investigation to stay on the good side of MAGA nutters who were sure the 2020 election was tainted, and he said he’d release the results to the public as soon as he knew them. He lied. He knew the election was fair for nearly a year but instead of telling the public, he claimed there were “serious vulnerabilities” with the vote—providing oxygen to the Big Lie and GOP campaigns. Former US Rep. Tom O’Halleron lost his Arizona House race to crazy denier Eli Crane, and Jevin Hodge barely lost his House race to denier David Schweikert. Those two races, and maybe others, probably would’ve ended differently had AG Brnovich’s report been available to the public ahead of the midterms. We wouldn’t even know about Brnovich’s report, of course, if Democrat Kris Mayes had not won the AG’s race in November. She released the documents last week and already the deniers are claiming the report twisted the evidence (that would be the Republican AG’s report). Many deniers were interviewed by the AG’s office and given an opportunity to present evidence. They couldn’t and didn’t. But don’t expect them to shut up. See: Kari Lake.
