I rolled my eyes. “This isn’t the first time,” I said. “I took a week off work to relax and de-stress. I have to go back next Tuesday.” “That’s why we’ve been cuddling so much?” “Well, that, plus it’s really cold.” We both looked toward the window. It was raining and windy outside. “It’s kind of the opposite of what people think of when they think ‘vacation,’” I admitted. “Usually you go somewhere sunny and warm.” He frowned at me. “I’m not going anywhere,” I assured him. “I can’t even afford to heat this house, much less fly somewhere.” He stood and stretched, then turned in a circle before settling again in a ball on my lap. I knew he was cold, but if I tried to cover him in the blanket he’d get mad and leave. I wrapped my arms around his body the best I could and we both sighed. Even though it was cold, it was a cozy way to spend an afternoon. I picked up my library book and flipped it open. “Where would you go for vacation?” Freddie asked. I looked at him over my book. “Humans like to go explore new places, or sometimes go to a beach or something like that.” I thought about it. “I’m not really much of a traveler, though. I like staying home.” He rested his head on my leg. “I like that too.” “If you could go somewhere on vacation, where would you go?” I asked, curious. “Catnip Fields,” he answered immediately. My eyebrows went up. “Is that a resort for cats?” I asked. “It’s the best resort for cats,” he confirmed. “Is there a real catnip field?” I wondered. “It’s the softest catnip. You can sleep in it, and roll around in it, and eat it straight from the soil.” “Is that where the catnip I get from the pet store comes from?” “Oh no,” he said, warming up to the subject. “This is the absolute best catnip ever grown! What you get is pretty good,” he reassured me, “but it’s no catnip fields!” “And you just sleep in the catnip all day? Or are there activities? Shows?” “All of that, yes. It’s the ultimate cat destination!” “There are patches of catnip in the sun, and some in the shade. And then you can choose a bed if you don’t want to sleep in the plants. They have soft beds and hard beds and boxes.” “You like soft beds,” I said. “I do! I would pick a very soft bed with a furry blanket cover. And maybe I’d have them put it in a box for me.” “Is it staffed by cats?” He frowned up at me. “We don’t have thumbs,” he said, as if it were obvious. "You’d have a human put your bed in a box,” I prompted him. “That’s right! And put it in a patch of sunlight. Then I’d spend the morning sleeping. After that, I’d have a drink at the milk fountain.” “The milk fountain isn’t in the sun, is it?” “It’s inside the building with the tall kitty condos,” he explained. “You could climb in there?” “After a good drink from the fountain, yes, I’d climb all over everything.” “And then you’d probably have to hit the litter box,” I pointed out. “Cats are lactose intolerant.” “It sounds like a nice place,” I said, rubbing the fur between his ears. “It’s pretty good,” he agreed, “but you know what?” “What?” “I’d rather sleep on your lap. It’s better than a field of soft catnip.” “I’d rather freeze with you here than sit on the warmest beach,” I told him, sincerely. Happy Caturday, Peeps! My vacation is almost over, but it was nice hanging out with Freddie for a week.
