It is typical of many letters I have seen over the course of several years in this rural Pennsylvania county. Letter to the editor: Let's cut Congress' expenses instead Just saw a news clip of President Joe Biden talking about raising the debt ceiling. He was asking where cuts to the new budget would come from if we don’t raise it. He went on using his usual scare tactics: “Do we cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ programs?” I have an idea, Mr. President: We have 435 House representatives and 100 senators. Let’s reduce their daily “living” stipend, cut each of their staffs by 15%, cut their travel budgets, give them a less expensive health care plan, etc. Why do cuts always have to be to the people who pay for the budget — us citizens? Sorry, Mr. President, we have had enough of “our” presidents and representatives not thinking of the consequences of raising the debt ceiling. (Signed by the writer) I am musing about whether to even bother answering the letter. Yet, part of me wants to! What I’d like to say is something like this: As a response to the letter written by (name of writer): What planet are you from? If you have been following Joe Biden for even a second, you will know he is totally committed to protect “Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans' programs”!!! It is the Republicans who want to cut all those, which they call “entitlements”! What’s wrong with you?? However, I don’t think it would make any difference. Maybe the writer has been watching FOX news and saw a news show that twisted Biden’s words. That would not be surprising. The thing is, the people around here are good people, for the most part. They are kind and help me out whenever I need it. They are here for me if I have an emergency. The fix-it people don’t charge much and there’s a spirit of being a good neighbor. So I don’t want to insult them. How would you approach responding to the letter? I don’t want a whole letter, but just the way you think answering the letter would make a difference. Or do you think it’s a waste of time? Thanks!
