Mysterious Dish Internal Systems Outage - Since Thursday [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-25 Dish’s supporting systems are off the air and have been since Thursday. I discovered it while trying to activate a replacement receiver. It couldn’t contact the back-end systems. Their call center has a message saying they are working to restore their internal systems. Their Web sites are down, you cannot pay your bill or even log into your account. Apparently, their 16,000 employees are unable to connect to their VPN and all their telephony is out as well. They contend that satellite services are still accessible, but not for us…or anyone else that needs support activity. They dropped into oblivion right about the time of their earnings call. The company has been officially very silent about this. I could certainly be wrong, but speaking as an old IT guy, this sure feels like a ransomware hit. The breadth and length of the outage are telling. So is the company’s silence. Some IT folks are having a really tough weekend. Folks, be sure to back up your stuff...and always have an “air gap” between your systems and a known good backup. Do this even for your laptop or desktop. Just a USB drive that you unplug will suffice. It really sucks when you can’t get to any of your stuff because it has been maliciously encrypted. I think I’ll run a fresh backup myself. Cheers.
