Republican Leaders are No Heroes [1]

As the fog of our initial confusion and shock dissipate, we begin to see the truth. By now it is clear that the heroes of the Story of the Invasion of Ukraine are the Ukrainian people themselves, their courageous President Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy, the organization of NATO led by their steady and wise secretary general the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg, and other leaders of the free world including Poland, France, Britain, Canada, Germany, small countries like Latvia and Lithuania, the European Union and President Joseph Biden and his supporters in the United States. Across the world, people great and humble are stepping up to this moment with such remarkable courage.

So . . . where are the American Republican leaders in all this?

I’m afraid they are looking remarkably petty and unheroic. So busy looking for ways to spin the narrative to their falsehoods that they are missing the moment in time when real heroes are needed.

As President Biden said, “Every generation of Americans has faced a moment where they have been called on to protect our democracy, to defend it, to stand up for it. And this Is our moment.”

But the Republicans are missing in action.

They are, in fact, trying to trip up the real heroes, especially President Biden and Democratic leaders here in the US, for their own political gain. Like wartime profiteers through the ages, the 2023 Republican party, on the whole, only cares about their own political profit. Like the transgressor on a sovereign state, Vladimir Putin, they are, in fact, devoid of any and all moral integrity.

But more and more, their tactics only put them to shame. At the same time as Ukranians are giving their lives to save their beloved if imperfect democracy—here I want to use the adjective “heroically” again—Republicans are making statements that any high school civics student knows are ridiculously ignorant, calling for a ‘national divorce,’ saying ‘America is a constitutional republic, not a democracy,’ and so on. While the Ukrainian people are fighting for their beloved democracy, Republicans can’t even remember the value of democracy.

But it’s valuable. Very valuable. So valuable that generations of American soldiers and Civil Rights activists and American leaders of integrity like Abraham Lincoln died fighting to defend it.

Like the misguided Americans and British people of their age who were enamored of Hitler, the American Republicans of this time will be judged as very much on the wrong side, an impediment to freedom rather than keepers of the flame.
