Happy Black History Month! Let’s discuss the impact of Black History Month. As a school-age girl, I was excited to learn about events, places, and people. However, it was short and cherry-picked. I didn’t know about Garrett Morgan, Jarena Lee, the Tulsa Race Massacre, or the Red Summer of 1919. I remembered other parents complaining about Malcolm x, Marcus Garvey, the Mid-Atlantic Slave Trade, and the Haitian Revolution. I didn’t know about these people, places, and events because there were “concerned” parents, teachers, administrators, and board members that didn’t feel the need to teach them. Either they didn't know how to teach them or knew but didn’t seem to see the need for students to be told the truth in its entirety. Fast forward to 2023; the hysteria continues. According to usafacts.org, some states passed laws to restrict teaching "divisive concepts", such as curriculum that includes race, gender identity, and sexual orientation. What doesn’t make sense is the fact that these laws were passed to “protect the innocence of children”, not help the children develop tools to dismiss disinformation and fallacies. Using critical race theory as a boogeyman to not teach what happened in this country hinders our kids, not helping them become better leaders. When I learned the stuff that was prohibited from high school history classes, I was angry with the adults that thought this was fine. Since I have two sons, I learn what they learn without getting angry about what happened to me as a child. If this is the “land of the free, home of the brave” why are we passing these laws? Thank you for reading and Happy Black History Month!
