Derecho forecast for Oklahoma this evening, with hurricane force winds and tornadoes [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-26 NWS Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Derecho centered on parts of Oklahoma this evening into tonight, with widespread damaging winds and embedded swaths of significant hurricane-force wind gusts from 80-110 mph. Isolated large hail up to baseball size are possible. Embedded tornadoes are anticipated as well, with the greatest potential for strong (EF2-EF3) tornadoes across southwest Oklahoma this evening. x A derecho (a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms) has been forecast by SPC, with widespread damaging winds of 80-110 mph with the line of storms later this evening. Timing Late this evening. See graphic below. x Everything is still on track for a potentially significant wind event as a line of storms crosses the area this evening. Now would be a good time to get your devices charged and prepare for potential power outages!#okwx #texomawx pic.twitter.com/DFprm0Nj9s — NWS Norman (@NWSNorman) February 26, 2023 Severe thunderstorm and tornado watches are already being issued. x A tornado watch has been issued for portions of the OK/TX Panhandle, Western Oklahoma, and far southern Kansas. All severe weather hazards are expected including wind gusts up to 100 mph, large hail (some 2+ inches), and embedded tornadoes (some EF2+) pic.twitter.com/yTiziWnNFR — NWS Storm Prediction Center (@NWSSPC) February 26, 2023 A simulation of what the radar will look like this evening. The system will move in the northeast direction. x NEW: A damaging #derecho – or serious windstorm – with widespread 60-80 mph winds and embedded 100+ mph gusts is expected across #Oklahoma tonight. This is a high-resolution (#HRRR) simulation. Be prepared to avoid travel on I-40, I-44, I-35 and the H.E. Bailey Turnpike. pic.twitter.com/4Mg09DFzIQ — MyRadar Weather (@MyRadarWX) February 26, 2023 These storms will be triggered by the same upper-air disturbance that brought severe weather to California, including up to 81 inches of snow in the Los Angeles County mountains. The differential temperature over the region today - Plus the low pressure area caused by the storm system in CA, strong winds just above the surface and lighter winds at the ground create conditions favorable for supercell and derecho development. Derecho From en.wikipedia.org/… — A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective system. Derechos can cause hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, heavy rains, and flash floods. In many cases, convection-induced winds take on a bow echo (backward "C") form of squall line, often forming beneath an area of diverging upper tropospheric winds, and in a region of both rich low-level moisture and warm-air advection. According to www.weather.gov/… By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles (about 400 kilometers) and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho. The graphic below shows how derechos form. Warm moist air from the right travels up the column at the front end, rain cooled air descends rapidly to ground level creating high forward winds, which in turn feeds more moist warm air to the upper layers. More info at www.weather.gov/... Precautions and Preparedness Avoid travel. Stay home. Stay informed. Secure loose items. Expect power outages. Keep all batteries charged. Shelter in an interior part of the home at the lowest floor. x A significant severe event remains on track this evening, especially across parts of NE OK where wind gusts of 80mph and a few tornadoes (possibly strong) could occur. Stay weather aware today and plan now for how to receive warnings and where to seek shelter. #okwx #arwx pic.twitter.com/bHFc64RqMy — NWS Tulsa (@NWStulsa) February 26, 2023 [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/2/26/2155101/-Derecho-forecast-for-Oklahoma-this-evening Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
