I post a weekly diary of historical notes, arts & science items, foreign news (often receiving little notice in the US) and whimsical pieces from the outside world that I often feature in "Cheers & Jeers". OK, you've been warned - here is this week's tomfoolery material that I posted. CHEERS to Bill and Michael in PWM, our Laramie, Wyoming-based friend Irish Patti and ...... well, each of you at Cheers and Jeers. Have a fabulous weekend .... and week ahead. ART NOTES — an exhibition entitled Salvador Dali: the Twelve Tribes of Israel — a 1973 portfolio completed in drypoint (nearly identical to engraving, and hand-colored) — will be at the Grand Rapids, Michigan Museum of Art to March 11th. Levi, completed in 1972 YOUR WEEKEND READ is this essay in Politico, listing 28 rules for interacting with others in Washington, D.C. at any sort of social gathering that might involve politics, with one example — when you encounter someone you may/may not have met before (or forget their name) — just ask, “Where are you, now?” THURSDAY's CHILD is a Mexican sphynx kitteh rescued from a Ciudad Juárez prison (after being tattooed by members of the Sinaloa cartel) and will be placed in adoption next week. Hairless breed (easy to tattoo) EMPLOYMENT NOTES — the consulting giant McKinsey & Company is reportedly planning to lay off 2,000 staff — not due to scandals, such as its alleged role in aiding state capture in South Africa — but in order to preserve the compensation pool of its partners (according to reports first published by Bloomberg). FRIDAY's CHILD attended a city council meeting in eastern Washington state (sitting in the overhang ceiling top of the Council Chambers) and was “quite vocal” when every participant spoke … and was later taken to a shelter during a break. in Liberty Lake, Washington BRAIN TEASER — try this Quiz of the Week's News from the BBC ...… and the usually easier, less UK-centered New York Times quiz. THE OTHER NIGHT yours truly hosted the Top Comments diary with a look at some old songs that have its origin in advertising … and some old ads that came up while compiling this essay. OLDER-YOUNGER BROTHERS? (h/t Eric Alterman) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Academy Award-winning actor Sam Rockwell. Antony Blinken (born 1962) Sam Rockwell (born 1968) ...... and finally, for a song of the week ...........................… hectic week, so just enough time for a short song back-story. In my Top Comments diary this week, I briefly noted the famous set of Los Angeles studio musicians (whose heyday was in the 1960’s — mid-70’s) known as the Wrecking Crew (of whom Glen Campbell, James Burton and Leon Russell spent some time with). In the 1960’s especially, many groups found their record producers wanting to use these session players, rather than the existing band members. By the 1970’s that began to change, with bands unwilling to have the actual touring members sit-out … but it was a staple of the 1960’s. When The Byrds were formed in 1964, one of the first songs they informally recorded was a version of Mr. Tambourine Man (which their manager Jim Dickson had obtained an acetate of from Bob Dylan). When they went into the studios to record a single for their new record company (Columbia) in January, 1965 — they were assigned Terry Melcher (Doris Day’s son, who later found himself entangled with Charles Manson’s family) who liked their rendition of Mr. Tambourine Man. At the time, Melcher did not think the band’s musicians had much recording experience (nor had performed together long enough to become polished) and so on the single he only used guitarist Jim McGuinn (later to be renamed Roger, who did have some recording experience) as an instrumentalist. The rest of the instrumentalists were members of the Wrecking Crew (although David Crosby and lead singer Gene Clark did add vocal harmonies). It reached #1 on the singles charts (the only Bob Dylan-written song ever to reach that peak). The rest of their debut album was not recorded until two months later … and by this time, Melcher felt the other band members had become much more tighter musically (having performed relentlessly in regional clubs). And so that single is the only song on their debut album (aptly named Mr. Tambourine Man) … with the Wrecking Crew. Years later, Columbia released a collection of early Byrds recordings … including the initial recording of Mr. Tambourine Man. Both are included below … and while the Wrecking Crew version is no doubt more polished (and helped it climb the charts) … the original unreleased version has its charms … judge for yourself. The original recording (using all of the band members). f Here is the official released version … using the Wrecking Crew.
