Some truly high body counts: Selected headlines from 1974 [1]

Tornadoes, fires, plane crashes. A high body count.

Okay, here we go again. I am posting, year by year, the history of each year, every other Sunday, and the hit music of each year, on the alternating Sundays.

That is one of the lower body count events.

March 3 – Turkish Airlines Flight 981, travelling from Paris to London, crashes in the woods near Paris, killing all 346 aboard. This becomes the deadliest single aircraft accident with no survivors.

April 3–4 – An enormous tornado outbreak strikes the central parts of the United States, killing around 319 and injuring about 5,484.

I live in Wichita, Kansas, in tornado alley, as they call it. Most of the time, when a tornado touches down, nobody is killed, nobody is even injured. But, obviously, there are sometimes unusual storm systems that kill.

May 11: A violent 7.1 earthquake shakes the Chinese city of Zhaotong causing between 1,600 and 20,000 deaths.

Wait a minute. The folks giving out the information on the body count, could not get a number any more specific? Between less than 2 thousand, and 20 thousand? Wow.

Watergate scandal: August 8 - U.S. President Richard Nixon announces his resignation on August 8, effective at noon on August 9. August 9 - Vice President Gerald Ford is sworn in as the 38th President of the United States upon Nixon's resignation.



I gave you some news that is not body count news.

August 30 – An express train bound for Germany from Belgrade derails in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (now Croatia), killing more than 150 passengers.

I thought trains in Europe were pretty safe.

September 8 - TWA Flight 841 crashes into the Ionian Sea 18 minutes after takeoff from Athens, after a bomb explodes in the cargo hold, and kills 88 people.

Flying, compared to trains, is very dangerous.

Another plane crashes.

I had to go to another link, to get that body count.

Ending on a happy note. Happy, unless the Rubik’s Cube makes you angry! (I never even tried it, myself.)
