Social Security's Chief Judge Not Endorsed by Own Judges' Union in Chicago's 46th Ward Race [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-02-27 Voters will elect a new alderperson in Chicago's 46th Ward on February 28th, with a runoff election on April 4, 2023. Updated. In a six-way race for alderperson of Chicago’s 46th Ward, candidates have racked up labor and political support/endorsements. Angela Clay has been endorsed by the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America; Marianne Lalonde has been endorsed by former alderpersons, as well as by other political groups (like the science-oriented 3.14 Action and Run For Something); Kim Walz has been endorsed by Democratic party heavyweights (like Senator Dick Durbin and Governor J.B. Pritzker); and Roushaunda Williams’ campaign has received funding from Unite Here’s political arm. See blockclubchicago.org/... While the Block Club Chicago article indicated that there was no campaign website for real estate agent Michael Cortez, there does appear to be a website now (although no endorsements appear there). See friendsofmichaelcortezfor46thw.godaddysites.com Social Security’s Chief Judge, Patrick Nagle, kicked off his campaign for alderman in August 2022. See patricknaglefor46.com/... His website also does not reflect any labor or other endorsements, including from the Social Security judges’ union. In the “Meet Patrick” section of his campaign website and in press, Mr. Nagle has emphasized his federal job and alleged accomplishments. See patricknaglefor46.com/...; see also blockclubchicago.org/… And, during a January 26th candidate forum, Mr. Nagle repeatedly emphasized his “executive experience” and long tenure of public service. See www.uptownupdate.com/… Mr. Nagle emphasized his federal job title and “executive leadership experience” in questionnaire responses to the Chicago Tribune on February 9th. See www.chicagotribune.com/... Unlike Mr. Cortez who has not emphasized specific experience in his campaign, Mr. Nagle emphasizes both his prominent federal position and “executive experience” (or “executive leadership experience”) as credentials. And, that tends to make the absence of endorsements, including from his own judges’ union, an issue. The vast majority of Mr. Nagle’s 1,500 judges at Social Security are represented by the Association of Administrative Law Judges (AALJ), and that union does not appear to have offered him an endorsement. With only days until the election, it does not appear to be forthcoming. In terms of press, a December 2020 article indicated that the judges’ union gave Mr. Nagle and his supervisor an 84 percent no confidence vote. See www.federaltimes.com/… Of course, that article is now two years old. Another Daily Kos article discusses a complicated history for the judges’ union with Social Security management. See www.dailykos.com/… Including the union’s more recent allegations that judges in the National Hearing Centers (NHCs) should properly be included in the bargaining unit, and those allegations have received support from Democratic Senators in the form of a letter to acting Commissioner of Social Security Kilolo Kijakazi. See www.govexec.com/… In the interest of full disclosure, Mr. Nagle’s wife, Kim Soo Nagle, is also a Social Security judge, appears in campaign photographs, and has worked primarily in the Chicago NHC. See www.disabilityjudges.com/… It’s odd that Mr. Nagle is emphasizing long public service and “executive experience” (or “executive leadership experience”) without endorsements, in an election race chock full of them. The Chicago Tribune Editorial Board recently endorsed Kim Walz for the 46th Ward. See www.chicagotribune.com/... In a prior Daily Kos article, the ethical concerns for a federal agency whenever a federal employee, like Mr. Nagle, runs for public office were discussed. See www.dailykos.com/… That article reached no conclusions, however.
