And the scourge of “Cancel Culture” — Why not put an end to it with the Iron Fist of the State!? Florida bill would require bloggers to register before writing about DeSantis by Julia Mueller, The Hill — 03/02/23 A bill proposed this week by a Republican state senator in Florida would require bloggers who write about Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), his Cabinet officers and members of the Florida legislature to register with the state. Bloggers who receive compensation for a given online post about an elected state officer would have to register with the Florida Office of Legislative Services or the Commission on Ethics — though the requirement would not extend to the websites of newspapers or similar sites. “If a blogger posts to a blog about an elected state officer and receives, or will receive, compensation for that post, the blogger must register with the appropriate office … within 5 days after the first [post] by the blogger which mentions an elected state officer,” reads the bill, introduced by Republican state Sen. Jason Brodeur. In the fine print of the bill edict is this gem, on page 8: [...] failure to timely file a report and the amount of the assessed fines. The rule must also provide for, but need not be limited to, the following provisions: (a) A fine of $25 per day per report for each day late, not to exceed $2,500 per report. Sen. Jason Brodeur’s bill, titled “Information Dissemination,” would also require bloggers to disclose who’s paying them for their posts about certain elected officials and how much. [...] If this approach sounds at all familiar, it might be because Vladimir Putin signed a similar measure — known as the “bloggers law” — in 2014, requiring online writers to register with the Russian government.
