Florida State Senator Clay Yarborough has introduced SB254 into the Florida Senate. It’s a bill which could (among other horrors) legalize the action of, as an example, a transphobic parent forcibly taking their child away from the other parent if they even think that child is “at risk” of receiving gender-affirming care. I’ve read enough stories about Florida’s apparent 'war' on LGBTQ to make my eyes roll. The introduction of this bill has led me to wonder what in Blazes Florida, as a whole, is so scared of? For the record: I’m ‘straight’ as an arrow in my own preferences. I’ve been happily married for 24 wonderful years to an amazing lady who, though legally blind and mobility-impaired, has a mind and perceptions sharp enough to put many who have all their senses intact to shame. With that said: Neither one of us are the least uncomfortable with any who perceive their gender as different from the one their physical body was born with, nor those who prefer companions of their own gender in the intimate sense. We simply see such as other people. Be nice to us, we’ll be nice right back to you! Clearly, such people have made a choice which works for them, just as we made choices which work for us. Why all the judgment and hate? No one we’ve met among the LGBTQ community has ever tried to “groom” either of us, or force their beliefs on us. Sure, I’ve been propositioned a time or two… So has my lady. So what? In all such cases, a simple “Thanks, but I’m spoken for” or something similar was more than sufficient. Fear can be a sign of insecurity with one’s self or a lack of knowledge or understanding (or all the above). Fear does not feel good, and it is not the way I or my lady choose to live. I’m utterly baffled as to why, apparently, so many (especially those in power) would choose fear as a way of life. What the *&@*$&%%! is wrong with Florida?!
