More independents are starting to take note [1] ['Daily Kos Staff', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-03-09 A recent Gallup poll, for instance, found that just 34% of Americans approve of Biden's handling of the economy, whereas 53% approve of his response to the coronavirus. Part of the problem for Biden and Democrats is this decades-long myth that Republicans are better for the economy; it's a completely unwarranted yet stubborn perception held by most voters. But another part of the problem is that voters simply don't realize the strides President Biden has made in pulling the U.S. economy out of the COVID-19 abyss. A Navigator Research survey in January, for instance, found that more voters believed the economy lost jobs last year (32%), than believed it had created jobs (29%). Another 17% thought job creation/losses were roughly even and 22% didn't know. That means less than one-third of voters were accurately informed about the economy's job growth last year. The bright side for Team Biden is that the facts are on their side, and while dismantling the myth that Republicans are better for the economy is a long-term project, informing voters about Biden's record on the economy is likely an easier intervention. In fact, Civiqs tracking on the issue of job creation suggests President Biden might already be making progress on that front. Since mid-January, Biden has improved a net 4 points on the question of "Is President Biden doing enough to create jobs?" At 40% yes to 50% no, Biden is 10 points underwater on the question, whereas he was 14 points underwater in mid-January. That's also the best the president has performed on the question during his entire tenure. x Civiqs Results But maybe more importantly, the main driver of that improvement comes among independents and highly educated independents, in particular. Overall, independents' perceptions of Biden's job creation are still largely underwater, with 31% saying the president is doing enough to create jobs compared to 55% who say he isn't. But that still represents a 7-point net improvement since mid-January, and 31% "yes" is similarly the best Biden has polled on the issue since taking office in early 2021. Among independent college graduates, Biden also netted a 7-point improvement since mid-January on the question, with 35% saying he's doing enough while 50% say he isn't. But among independent postgraduates, Biden has entered into positive territory on the question, at 44% yes – 41% no—a net 9-point improvement since mid-January. x Civiqs Results Other tracking indicators also suggest President Biden is notching modest improvement on economic measures. Support for Biden's $1 trillion infrastructure law has netted a 13-point improvement since he signed it into law in November 2021. It began 15 points above water and is now 28 points above water at 56% support – 28% oppose. x Civiqs Results Attitudes toward the current state of the national economy are also showing modest improvement, even as they remain pretty dismal. But 30% saying the economy is "good" while 66% say it's "bad" is voters' best outlook on the economy since a little over a year ago, when Russia first invaded Ukraine. x Civiqs Results We'll keep an eye on these indicators moving forward, but Biden's message about job growth does appear to be yielding some fruit. Additionally, the popularity of some of his accomplishments, such as the historic infrastructure investment, is growing over time. Markos and Kerry luxuriate in the battle going on between Donald Trump’s ascending fascism and Mitch McConnell’s disappearing neocon establishment. The fighting has become much sharper recently as the MAGA-media outlet Fox News has traveled further and further away from reality.
