How can Generative AI (ChatGPT) threaten the 2024 presidential election?

Here are some early thoughts.

Generative AI can create images and videos that look real but are fake

Here is an example of a fake image created by an AI (source: NYT). Now imagine this technology being used to create images of politicians in compromising situations.

A deepfake video could be created with a politician saying something insulting or dangerous. Millions of people would see the video on social media before it was brought down or called out. And since these deepfake images and videos are so easy to create, social media would be flooded with them and there may not be enough human reviewers to stop them.

Generative AI can follow you around the Internet and become your friend

Imagine this nightmare scenario.

An AI bot follows you around the Internet. It reads everything you write. All of your social media — Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok. It communicates with you via comments.

It earns your trust. It starts DM’ing you.

Then it starts influencing you.

To change your vote. To change your views. To change your perspective.

Given that in 2016 and 2020, much tamer technology — Facebook groups with fake news — influenced millions of people, it stands to reason that Generative AI will be a gamechanger.

Generative AI can be used to create sophisticated social media bots

The media regularly discovers Twitter bot armies spreading positive information about one candidate and negative information about another.

Today, these bot armies are relatively easy to catch because the bots are dumb: they only retweet other users or they same the same thing over and over again.

Generative AI will allow the creation of far more sophisticated bots. These bots will be able to engage in conversations, ride the wave of current events, and generate novel responses.

As a result, they will be much harder to identify and stop.
