Why Daily Kos is using AP wire [1] ['Daily Kos Staff', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-03-09 Announcement regarding Daily Kos’ use of AP wire stories As you might have noticed, we have started publishing Associated Press wire stories at Daily Kos, and now that we have completed our testing and training, and worked out initial kinks, I wanted to explain why we’ve decided to do it. Daily Kos shines when our knowledgeable writers analyze and contextualize news through our progressive lens. There are thousands of journalists on the “this happened” beat, not to mention Twitter. We’re never going to compete with them, and our audience doesn’t come to us for that. They come for what we add to that news. Yet, breaking news has value, giving our community a place to discuss the hottest news of the moment, as quickly as possible, and that’s what AP wire stories give us. They also allow us to publish stories the community might want to discuss but are outside of our editorial mission (like this story about radioactive dogs). The AP wire doesn’t replace any writers. Rather, it frees up our staff writers to focus their limited time and energy on our highest-value content—the contextualizing, analysis, and unique perspectives that enrich the conversation and drive our readers to action. AP stories will also allow us to cover breaking news on nights, weekends, and holidays when there’s limited staff on duty. Yes, we might still need people to come in after regular hours to cover certain stories directly related to our core mission (like, say, the State of the Union address), but the AP wire will help reduce that need so that writers' time can be their own. We take work-life balance seriously and will always work to minimize extended work hours. Finally, I want to note that we won’t be running AP content that contradicts our values and mission. That means Daily Kos editors will remove self-serving Republican statements or "both sides" quotes from stories, which the AP allows us to do, and we will rewrite headlines as needed to better serve our audience. That linked story above, about the radioactive dogs, was actually posted by Mark Sumner. In the comments, he noted: I have the keys to the AP account now, so it’s going to be radioactive dogs and space news all the way down (except, you know, for the 99.9% of the time when it’s politics and breaking news).
