You have been built up from nothing by the spare parts of the Earth you have consumed, according to a set of instructions hidden in a double helix and small enough to be carried by a sperm. You are recycled butterflies, plants, rocks, streams, firewood, wolf fur, and shark teeth, broken down to their smallest parts and rebuilt into our planet’s most complex living thing. You are not living on Earth. You are Earth." Words by Aubrey Marcus There are 92 minerals in our blood. Many of these trace minerals need to be replaced daily. We don’t know what all of these minerals do. Some may only be there in order for other minerals to function properly. These same 92 minerals are found in the ocean. The ratio of amounts, although not equal, are similar. This should not surprise us. As we go back into the development of life on earth, life began with single-cell organisms in the ocean. Millions of years of development eventually resulted in animals that left the seas. These animals would eventually become humans. The animals on land would not have been able to exist without the development of plant life. From the plants, animals scavenger the minerals necessary for life. These plants took the power of the sun to mine the minerals in the soil. These minerals would not have been available to the plants without the development of a multitude of organisms within the soil. Many of these organisms are also within our bodies. They enable our body to utilize and process minerals. There is no other source of these organisms than from plants and/or the animals we eat that have also eaten the plants. As the plates of rock, deep under the oceans of water moved, they crashed into each other pushing mounds of rock up as mountains. In other places, the hot interior of the earth spewed molten lava forming mounds that became islands and other landforms. Each of these eruptions of rock brought forth different layers of our earth exposing different types of rocks. Each layer was composed of different minerals. As rain washed bits of these rocks into the ocean, a variety of minerals began to accumulate. The ratio of 92 minerals developed. Meanwhile, on the rocky enclaves, organisms dissolved these outcrops into trace minerals. Heat, freezing and thawing along with falling rain washed these minerals into the seas. The humus from the growth and dying of the plants provided soil full of bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, fungi and minerals. As the ocean developed a variety of minerals, the soil around the world developed varieties. Birds spread different minerals as they flew around the world. Animals roamed the earth spreading digested plant material containing different minerals. Winds carried dust from one area to another spreading the minerals around the world. Plants and trees sent roots deep into the earth bringing even more minerals from rocks to the surface. In time, most soils had a variety of trace minerals. When plants uptook minerals, They returned them to the soil as they died. As animals ate plants with their minerals, their death also returned the minerals to the soil. This balance enabled the soil to accumulate humus fostering organisms while building up topsoil in many parts of the world several feet deep. A circle of life existed. As populations of humans increased, cultivated crops produced food for stationary cities. With every removal of foodstuff, the amounts of trace minerals declined. With the tillage of the soil, disturbance of the trillions of microorganisms stunned their reproduction, reducing the life in the soil. Many major civilizations have ceased to exist because of the inability of the soil to continue to produce crops. A Dr. Mayard Murry began a study of the effect of minerals on plants in the 40’s through the 60’s. He made the following observation because his experiments demonstrated that the depletion of minerals contributes to ill health. “More than 100 million cases of chronic or long running illness and disablement afflict U.S. citizens today…Despite our wonder drugs, steroids, sanitation standards and general medical wizardry, the United States has one of the highest infection rates per capita of any society…” From Dr. Mayard Murry some time in the 50’s. My farming experience was beginning in the 50’s as a pre-teen growing up on a farm. As I studied agriculture for three years in high school and qualified for district, state and even National contests, I was a part of the Green Revolution. My first job involved the new farming methods for farmers, the Green Revolution. A larger crop of food with less labor through the use of enhanced seeds, artificial fertilizer, and weed and insect control through science. Yet today an even increase in the statement from Dr. Murry: “A huge increase in the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases has been reported in the United States (US) over the last 20 years. Similar increases have been seen globally.” From the Journal of Organic Systems, The difference now, from in the 50’s when Dr.. Murray made his statement, is that now not only has our soil been depleted of trace minerals, but the living soil consisting of microorganisms no longer exists because of tillage and toxic poisons. In addition, the food we eat today will have toxic chemicals in and on it. The introduction of these chemicals accumulates over the years and even though we now have a longer life span, that life span is tainted with a multitude of diseases and symptoms that never existed before. I have nothing new to add to our knowledge of food and health. Studies and their results abound in Medical Journals that have been peer-reviewed. The benefits of food and the harmful effects of food and associated preparation methods are available. The study of different diets from different cultures has been examined and reported. Yet, even with research, many of our perceptions are overshadowed by the commercialization of major corporations touting their efforts to feed us in a healthy method. Many people are concerned with what they eat. We have Vegans, Vegetarians, Meat eaters and a wide example of those who just don’t think about what they eat. A trip to any public place will quickly identify for us a major problem. Obesity and people using carts for mobility demonstrate health problems staring us directly in the face. And these are only those people who are still mobile enough to navigate in public. Diet plans along with diet foods abound and the effect is minimal. Exercise programs and equipment are utilized and soon abandoned. I am not encouraging you to eliminate or adapt new programs. Most of our problems are because we don’t know the secrets of food. Even those who think they have the right type of diet, I want to shout from the rooftops, “You are missing the important part of food. This is important whether you are Vegans, Vegetarians, Meat eaters or just want to eat any and everything. At the time I am writing this, I am 81 years old. In the last 18 months, I have lost 18 lbs, seen my blood pressure drop enough that my doctor adjusted my medicine, had all my blood results drop into the accepted levels and have seen an drastic increase in energy. I don’t want you to skip your medications or even make changes in your diet choices. Feel free to talk to your doctor. My guess is that he will comment that it would be good but will not have any knowledge of what you express to him. I am talking about UNDERSTANDING what food really is... A CHANGE in your life made possible by the knowledge and understanding of the earth where we came from. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------— I am writing a book ”You are what you Eat...” and will be posting each chapter on Daily Kos. Comments and criticisms are encouraged. I currently have thee books published. “JayWalkers Shouldn’t be Shot” and two fictions books under the pen name Pete Williams-”Talk to Me Dad!” and a teen adventure story ”Flood on the Buffalo”.
