Jon Stewart on the "broke" not "woke" GOP [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-03-28 Republicans are proud to oppose anything they see as “woke”, but they are “broke” when it comes to good ideas on governing. We all know that is why they have to distract the public with culture wars. Democrats are finding ways to solve problems, to keep government running, to fund Social Security, to reduce prescription drug prices, all while reducing the deficit. Meanwhile, the GOP leaders haven’t come up with an actual budget, or an alternative to the ACA (still waiting for that one). It’s easier to obstruct and scream about “wokeness”. Jon Stewart explains so well that the GOP resorts to culture wars because they are out of ideas in this interview with Fareed Zakaria on the CNN show GPS. Zacaria: … when you watch Republicans campaign against Democrats, they don’t campaign much on what they used to, which was that , you know , the Democrats are big spenders or whatever, it’s all about Critical Race Theory and it’s all this cancel culture stuff. Why does it work and what should Democrats do? Are they falling for a bait in doing this, in talking about these issues? Stewart: I don’t know if they are falling for a bait. But I mean, again, I don’t even think half the Republican that do it even mean it. … What would you do if you were out of governing ideas? If you didn’t know how to govern a country of this magnitude and a country of this diversity. And you are basically running on ‘Government is broken.’ And then when you get in office you have to be terrible to prove the original premise. Like, it must be great to be able to do that. ‘This government doesn’t work,’ and by me not funding it and breaking it, ‘See? See what I told you? Keep me in power.’ If you don’t have ideas on governing, what do you do? You do the purposeful distortion field that they create. Zacaria: But it works, because it’s emotional and Stewart: Does it work? Who’s the President? I mean it doesn’t necessarily work. It gets people upset. It gets them angry. It makes them fearful about threats and … hyperbole and makes them afraid of things that can’t even really be defined. Meanwhile ignoring so many issues.
