Even though I am limited to ‘non-work’ tools and platforms, I can do this quicker than most...and let me tell you—the volume of bills out there trying to make life harder for trans* folks is overwhelming. By way of example, I’m tracking 53 bills in Texas, and around 40 in Oklahoma. Without nationwide search software (that I can’t afford on my own right this moment), the search is state-by-state. I rely most on ErinInTheMorn’s Substack and the comprehensive work being done by Equality Federation, in addition to my own skill set. Check them out. I’ll always miss something. On that note, I have two unfortunate updates/corrections re: THCBs in Kentucky and West Virginia. Also, I neglected to list South Dakota as a state where a THCB for minors has been enacted. With those corrections, here’s what happened yesterday and today. We have FIVE new states with THCBs for minors. Five. Plus some action on a bathroom ban in Florida. Bathroom Bans A bathroom ban in Florida (HB1521), criminalizing the entering of a public bathroom of the ‘opposite sex’ where a person refuses to leave when asked to do so, was reported favorably out of committee. Trans* Health Care Bans Florida ’s THCB (SB254/HB1421) was reported favorably out of the House Health & Human Services Committee and will be pending on the House floor. The legislature in Kentucky overrode the Governor’s veto of their THCB (SB150) today and it is now law . The THCB in Idaho (HB71), complete with criminal penalties, passed the House with Senate Amendments. It will go to the Governor for his signature . Indiana’ s THCB (SB480) passed the House and will go to the Governor for his signature . The THCB in Montana (SB99) passed the Senate, concurring in the House Amendments, and will go to the Governor for his signature . One of Texas’ THCBs (SB14) is on its third reading and about to pass the Senate. West Virginia’s THCB (HB2007) was signed by the Governor today. I’m working on a writeup of the bathroom bills that are out there and will follow with a writeup of the drag bans that exist/remain. Fight like hell, y'all. Also, this is what secession-by-model-legislation looks like.
