NCAA history is made and it's not March Madness [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-03-29 This is such a cool story. Actually, it’s an astounding story! University of Chicago Head Men’s Soccer Coach Julianne Sitch became the 1st woman to win a Men’s Soccer NCAA national championship at any level, when her Monarchs knocked off Williams College 2-0 to win the NCAA Division III National Championship in early December. She came with a pedigree and a plan. As a dude who spent the last 15 years around college men’s soccer players (and this applies to most men’s teams), this is no small feat. And her team went 22-0-1, with their tie coming as almost a sign to half the population, lol, if they are paying attention (not likely). According to the Department of Education’s Equity in Athletics data published in 2021, there were no women head coaches in men’s football, soccer, baseball or basketball across 1,000 NCAA institutions surveyed in ’20–21. Meanwhile, more than half of women’s teams were coached by men. (In women’s soccer specifically, 66% of head coaches were men.) The number of black women head coaches (outside of women’s basketball-an even that’s not near enough) is worse. “When we first met her, she kind of pitched that to us,” says second-year midfielder Lyndon Hu. “You're not just chasing this end goal for the sake of the end goal. Every single day, you have the desire to push yourself to your max and get better. And then through winning every single day, winning every single moment, that puts you in a position to win the end goal.” It’s just a neat story and there are enough horror stories going on.
