Favorites from 2nd 100 National Park Visits by EV [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-03-31 Col. Rob’t Shaw leading the Massachusetts 54th Volunteers—the African American regiment celebrated in the movie ‘Glory’—under the motto “he forsook everything to serve the republic”, by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. I’ve been called a fool for traveling to as many national parks as possible in an electric vehicle to raise awareness of the Climate Crisis. And I’ve gotten a lot of funny questions about my car. Here are a few. (Links go to my ad-free blog). “What do you do about rain and puddles? Is that thing even waterproof?” — owner who saw me park in front of his Wyoming hotel in the rain. “Well, those things don’t have much range” — heard through my EV car window in Teddy Roosevelt ND, Canyon de Chelly AZ, Gila Cliff Dwellings NM, Great Basin NV, Big Hole MT, Sand Creek Massacre CO, Dinosaur UT, Nicodemus KS, etc. Teddy Roosevelt Canyon de Chelly Gila Cliff Dwellings Great Basin Big Hole Sand Creek Massacre Dinosaur Nicodemus “Costs about the same to fill up as my truck, right?” — guy putting 35 gallons into his Ford F250 at $6 per gallon in California last year. “But don’t you miss the romance? I love the roar, vibration, and sheer power of my Mustang.” — dude at red light before I hit 60 mph in 3 seconds. “What do you do when you’re charging?” — discussion at Starbucks, burger joint, rest room, hotel, campground, museum, and while watching base jumpers at Snake River Canyon in ID. But I don’t mind. Each one is an education opportunity to help encourage people to switch to electric travel. I’m also having the time of my life, and I plan to reach 300 parks later this year. This is an update to my first post at DK about this foolish errand. My old favorites from the first 100 sites still stand, but, especially after traveling much more in the northeast, many of my new favorites are Historical Parks, which are treasure troves. I hope you will follow the links below and check these out! Most in need of a big budget Hollywood epic to tell the story: Clark. Do you know the story of the young officer who added 5 states to our country? Favorite Revolutionary War site: Minute Man. Concord yes, Lexington no. Best site for art’s sake: Gaudens. Also see his works of Lincoln, Farragut, and Clover Adams, not to mention his lover…. Most stirring patriotic site: McHenry. Liberals love this country too. Site with the least to see, but the most fun I had writing a blog entry: Poe. Favorite from childhood memory: Marsh. “Shh, be quiet campers, we don’t want to disturb the Rockefellers”. Biggest rule broken: Steamtown. Biden’s favorite? OK, not 100% carbon free travel. Most innovative site that also serves historic beer: Dayton. I’ve mentioned this one in comments here before, because of the beer. Best overall city park? Honorable mentions go to Boston and New Bedford, but the best so far is Philly. Can’t choose a favorite? Oh yes I can: Harpers. Jefferson, John Brown and W.E.B. Du Bois, just to hint at the history. Oh, and they have great beer too. Thank you for your support!
