[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-03-31 “Prosecuting a well-known dirtbag for the crimes he likely committed brings us into totally uncharted waters, and the risks are high!“ [NOTE: I tagged this satire, but it’s actually just what’s going on...] American democracy faced its greatest test in over a century on Friday when it was revealed that a notorious dirtbag and serial scofflaw facing multiple criminal investigations had been indicted for some of the numerous crimes he likely committed, leaving a nation in shock and unsure of what the future holds. Across the country, partisans of the dirtbag expressed outrage at his indictment, which followed a years-long investigation into his fraudulent dirtbag business practices and hush-money payments to a porn star. “What kind of country do we live in,” raged one indignant asshat, “Where people can be indicted by a duly-convened grand jury merely because a preponderance of evidence shows probable cause that crimes were committed? North Korea?” Experts warn that the fissure opened up by this routine indictment of a known con man, sexual assault perpetrator, insurrectionist and golf cheat has the potential to tear the country apart. On the one side stand citizens who believe that those suspected of crimes should be held accountable via the judicial process while being afforded due process of law. On the other, those who argue that the prosecution has all the signs of a political witch hunt: that the anonymous grand jury is hopelessly biased, the unknown charges are unwarranted and unfair, and the undisclosed evidence is weak, totally exonerating, and also doesn’t exist. How, these dirtbag-apologists argue, can the judicial system possibly maintain its credibility as a fair and impartial arbiter of justice when the person under indictment is someone they really, really like? A person, moreover, who is a former President, and is therefore entitled to a level of deference in matters of criminal prosecution far above that of, say, former Secretaries of State named Hillary. Surely the prosecution’s pell-mell five-year-long rush to bring these charges proves bias! Isn’t it clearly unfair for prosecutors to seek to indict this man when another person they think is guilty remains at large? What about something about George Soros? And how are reasonable citizens expected to believe in the impartiality of a District Attorney who, in case after case that he has pursued in his capacity as chief law enforcement officer of New York City, is Black? These and other questions now hang over these totally routine criminal proceedings, but the outcome remains unknown. Prosecuting a well-known dirtbag for the crimes he likely committed brings us into totally uncharted waters, and the risks are high! Will this ordinary and unremarkable indictment of someone who is not above the law bring down a democracy that has stood for 200 years? Or will our system have the strength to weather the storm of putting a defendant on trial before a jury of his peers like it does pretty much every day? Only time will tell. But...probably we’ll be OK.
