Good News from Australia - the Coalition has been thrashed somewhat in a by-election [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-01 So you guys know that good stuff is happening overseas, in the Anglosphere anyway, so here is what happened on the weekend in Victoria. This is the first time in 103 years that a federal government has won a by-election. Usually, as you guys know with mid-terms, people go for the opposition to register a protest vote. Well, didn’t work this time, and this is a pattern setting in of searing losses for the coalition. Just in the last 12 months the Coalition has: lost a federal election, with the Greens and Teals (mix between middle-class conservative and US style Liberal) taking a lot of the Coalition seats lost to a 4 time winner of state election in Victoria lost as a one-term state government in South Australia lost a 4 term state government in NSW and now this. Also in 2021, the Coalition got reduce to just 4 seats in WA. Getting smashed by the ALP (Labor Party) was an understatement. The Murdoch press has lost their influence, as most voters now are 40 and under, and haven’t got much hope of owning their own home and the home that is the planet is being denied by the Coalition. Thanks to compulsory voting, a non partisan and independent federal/state Electoral Commission, Saturday voting and the stench of Scott Morrison (“Scotty from Marketing”) and the cringyness of the mainstream media and their hubris that it is ALWAYS 1981, means that the Coalition with the Liberal Party dying (Liberal here means massively right wing, yeah I know), and the Nationals (country bumpkins) holding steady at a never increasing or decreasing their seats, means sensible and progressive legislation can go through a lot easier. Things aren’t looking too bad here. Not fantastic, but nowhere near that I feel we are living in an insane asylum where the inmates run the Board. Here is part of what a commenter on the Guardian put it: “The Liberals via Howard, Abbott, Morrison and Dutton are aligned with the US Republicans and UK Tories in using division and a triumphant right wing media to push the boundaries of what outrage and lies can achieve.
