Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis maculaiius)

I’ll jump right in with video proof that my title is accurate. April Fools can keep their games, nature has plenty of surprises in store.

To further instill that nature has wonders that will entertain us, I offer this short 1 minute film of the Red-headed Woodpeckers near my home. I hope the embedded text is not a distraction from the real action.

Finally, my surprise of the day was in editing the following film. I was trying to capture breeding behavior of Great Egrets. I noticed extra movement within the frame. I found my 200th lifer (bird species) was mingling among the Egrets.

I didn’t know what a Gadwell was before this morning. Audubon calls it a chunky duck.

My Bug of the Day is beginning to arrive in large numbers. The flashes of yellow are everywhere and it lifts my heart to know the country will soon have Tiger Swallowtails flitting about.
