Why the Trump Indictment is actually good for Republicans [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-01 To be abundantly clear, I think that Trump should absolutely and unequivocally have been charged in this “hush money” case, assuming others accused of the same crimes have faced prosecution as well. (which indeed is the case). Full-stop. The rule of law is the rule of law and needs to mean something. Period. Having said that, I do believe that ultimately this is good news for the Republican Party, at least in the long term. And as we have seen on their 50 year war against abortion rights, and a number of other issues, the GOP and its institutions is all about investing in fights for , and thinking about, the long-term. I believe this for one reason, and one reason only — the fact that this indictment should finally, finally enable them to start moving beyond the human cancer that is Trump. That, of course, will take time — even if he is convicted in this case or any of the others. Quite some time, as the unhinged responses from cowards DeSantis, Graham, and chickenshit McCarthy have rapidly demonstrated. But it will start to happen eventually. Because clearly today’s chickenshit, sedition-supporting, unamerican, rule of law and democracy-hating, fundamentally unserious GOP doesn’t have the balls or integrity to do so otherwise. Of course, this and and other possible indictments to come may very well help Trump get the GOP nomination. If so, he will then lose the 2024 general election, possibly by a significant margin. And then his time on the national, public stage will be done. Cooked. So potential short-term GOP pain which will then at least start a slow transition back to a somewhat (I use that that term very, very liberally) sane GOP for 2028 and beyond. This, in turn, will enhance GOP prospects and statewide elections going forward. But of course, the current incarnation of the Republican Party is too shortsighted, too spineless, too corrupt, too unAmerican, too power-hungry, and too stupid to acknowledge this and act accordingly. I would also note that our country as a whole would be. much, much better off with a saner Republican Party. But that’s a different discussion. Would love to hear your thoughts!
