Holy Week - a modern re-enactment [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-02 Today's reading in church struck a chord - republicans are re-enacting holy week. Trump thinks he's cast as Jesus, on the way to crucifixion. In fact, he's actually Jesus Barabbas, a notorious criminal acclaimed by the crowds, but otherwise a minor footnote to the real story. If I could re-enact the whole passion play, I might cast the following (quotes are from Matthew 27, NIV): Jesus Christ, played by American Democracy - persecuted and soon to be killed by greed and hate, fear and bigotry Judas, played by the Supreme Court — “3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”” The High Priest, played by MTG The Sanhedrin, played by the House of Representatives Pontius Pilate, played by Mitch McConnell — “24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”” The crowd on Palm Sunday, played by Democrats — welcoming Jesus to Jerusalem and celebrating, but standing by helpless by the end of the week The crowd on Good Friday, played by the GOP - calling for Jesus' crucifixion and Barabbas' release; “25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”” The governor’s soldiers, played by the Proud Boys (and maybe with a cameo appearance from the FBI)— “27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. … 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. ” The women, played by our allies in the free world — “55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.” The promise — on Easter morning, Democracy can rise again from the dead.
