Can Mass Shootings Be Stopped? Where is the Solution? Every other week or so, it is the same old story, told over and over again, with politicians regurgitating the same arguments made hundreds of times in recent years. The usual suspects voicing the same meaningless appeals for “thoughts and prayers” we have all heard endlessly. No one can be blamed if they feel numb and helpless by all of these tragic developments. We are humans, after all. The pertinent question: why are there so many school shootings in the United States resulting in the murder of innocent schoolchildren and adults trying to educate these young people? Will it ever end? Why do we, as ordinary citizens, accept it as a normal feature of our busy lives? This problem isn’t a huge mystery to most rational people. The number of gun-related deaths (as shown in the graph below) is directly related to the proliferation of gun ownership in the country. By some estimates, there are over 400 million privately-owned guns in this country of 330+ million individuals — an average of over 1.2 guns for every American man, woman, and child. Is it any surprise that there are far more deaths that are gun-related here than in any other developed country in the world? It isn’t even close! Why, then, can the United States not do anything about gun ownership and the high number of resulting deaths from gun violence? After all, this is the same country that popularized the notion of representative democracy around the world; successfully fought two world wars against Nazism, fascism, and imperialism; engaged in an expensive, decades-long ideological struggle during the Cold War against totalitarianism, in which it prevailed; sent human beings to the moon; sent several exploration rovers to Mars, a planet almost 40 million miles away from earth; and made critical advances in civil rights, education, technology, science, architecture, music, film, and numerous other fields of innovation which have resulted in a better society and world. Surely, as a country, we can do better. How often have we heard the term “American ingenuity?” And yet, for the same country which prides itself in its ability to resolve complex technical problems and adapt to a changing world, it has failed miserably in tackling this issue. Are its political leaders blind or hopelessly in the thrall of special interest groups which cause this national political paralysis? To be blunt about it, this failure to act is our national shame — with no sensible solution in sight. Note : I will try to post Part 2 of this diary on Monday, April 3rd between 6:00-8:00 pm ET.
