PROJECT #1 Project: Rainforest Habitat Classroom Transformation Resources: Help me give my students a Rainforest science adventure they will never forget! Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Broad Rock Elementary School, Richmond, Virginia Total: $200.58 Still Needed: $ 183.81 $118.81 Project description by Ms. Lundquist: Help me create a lesson on rainforest habitats that students will never forget! In second grade, students learn about how habitats help provide for an animal or plant's needs. I am looking to create a project, in which my students get to explore the different habitats throughout stations in my classroom. By donating to this project you will be helping me create a rainforest habitat station for my students to explore. Students will be thrilled to enter the classroom to find rainforest birds and vines hanging from the ceiling! The tapestry includes images of rainforest animals hidden throughout a variety of rainforest plants. Students will use their binoculars to explore the scenery, making observations. Students will inspect the rainforest animal toy figurines to help make predictions on how the animals have adapted to survive in the rainforest. The books included in the project will be used as read-alouds during the unit, as well as a research tool for students. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity! This little South Carolina town has families with many different first languages, and Ms. McElroy wants books her students can take home and read with their family members! PROJECT #2 Project: More Bilingual Books Resources: Help me give my students bilingual books so they can read with family members at home. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Brockington Elementary School, Timmonsville, South Carolina Total: $349.58 Still Needed: $ 326.69 $261.69 Project description by Ms. McElroy: I work with a wonderful group of multilingual learners by collaborating with classroom teachers and supporting students in their classrooms. I also pull out small groups to teach specific skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The bilingual books that you are helping to fund will help my multilingual learners progress in the English language. These books will help my students improve their language acquisition and academic performance. It is important students maintain their native languages so that they can continue to benefit from being bilingual. My students will be allowed to take these books home allowing them to read with their parents and other family members. Each student will be excited to be able to read with their family members. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! x x YouTube Video x x YouTube Video We had an excellent week last week! Both of our projects were completed, and just for good measure, I linked two book projects in a comment, for anyone wishing to get in on a matching-funds-for-book-projects event on Thursday, and one of those was completed too! Project #1, Growing Plants!: Mrs. Weston wanted supplies to allow her Georgia kindergarten students to grow flowers from seeds, along with some books about plants and springtime. She writes: Thank you so much for supporting my students with their growing plants project. I am excited to teach them the process of how plants grow and watch them take care of their plants every day. Hopefully we will have some flowers for Mother's Day! Thank you once again for your support! Project #2, So Many Books, So Little Time: Ms. Roberts wanted a popular series of books for her elementary-school students on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, because they’ve pretty much read everything she currently has! She hasn’t learned the good news yet, but we’ll bring you her note when it’s posted. And we also had a small part in Booked for Summer Break!: Ms. Menifield teaches at another Mississippi elementary school, this one on the Tennessee border, and she hoped to give each of her students a book to take home over the summer. She writes: Thanks everyone for helping me to encourage my students to read this Summer and for fostering a love of reading. I know that my students are going to love reading these books this Summer. I am hoping that these books will leave a lasting impression on them so that they continue to pick up a book to read for learning and enjoyment. Thank you for supporting us. DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required! Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1024! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
