Apocabliss - Early Blooming Cherry Blossoms Signal Climate Crisis [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-03 As ‘peak bloom’ of Washington, D.C. cherry trees shifts from April 5 to March 31, there is a disconnect between the joy of the warming weather and the reality of the climate crisis responsible for the trees’ early blossoming. It echoes the ‘fine line’ politicians make in their communications about global heating, which must mix a sense of hope that action is still possible while conveying the urgency of the rapidly closing window of opportunity the world faces. “I do want people to also take heart in the fact that the movement for climate change and climate justice is making a huge difference,” says Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal … “We were the biggest laggards out of developed countries, and we have taken these huge steps.” Jayapal spoke with Slate reporter Christina Cauterucci after the IPCC released its AR6 Synthesis report, an ultimate warning that time is running out for even the most drastic measures to keep the world from heating beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius. The report, in fact, said that carbon capture is now a mandatory tool in the battle to preserve the planet’s environment. “It feels depressing every time you see one of those reports, because it just shows us, again, how far behind the eight ball we are,” Jayapal said. Last year, “we had a little moment of a high of passing the Inflation Reduction Act, and finally feeling like at least we were doing something … But I think the reality of how long it has taken us to act—this is not a ship you can turn easily. You have to move so many processes in order to move the result, move the needle on the dial.” In other news, the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication released the December 2022 version of its twice-yearly poll Climate Change in the American Mind. The poll evaluates the role public opinion plays in how the country responds to climate change. This year’s December 2-12, 2012 survey was conducted just after the 2022 U.S. Congressional elections.
