I drew this cartoon back in the 1990s, predicting where we might be in the future. The crash took longer than predicted, but here we are. Obviously, some things have changed, like the perception that "liberal Republicans" exist. Like the idea that fascists are outside of electoral politics. Like the perceived location of the "middle of the road." In the speech balloon, "they" refers to the voters, but also the whole electoral apparatus and moneyed interests manipulating it. Even back then, my own view of the middle was somewhat to the left of the general consensus. Try not to get into any serious squabbles about the accuracy of this cartoon, or lack thereof. [laugh emoji] Note: My intention was, and is, to point out the dangerous rightward movement in our elections and how the Overton window limits our grasp of the full range of political thought. Hopefully, everyone here understands that many progressive, green, and democratic socialist viewpoints are included within the Democratic party. Update. My first attempt at publishing this only showed part of the cartoon. Hopefully you can see the whole thing now.
