A Very Encouraging Wisconsin Map [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-04 Good News I Say Unto You! I just wanted to do a quick write-up on tonight’s Wisconsin Supreme Court election results/map. www.nytimes.com/… For the sake of brevity I’m going to refer to the two candidates as the D and the R — yes I know its a “non-partisan election.” There are a few things that really stuck out to me about tonight’s election map and results. (1) The R candidate could not clear 60% in any county of any size, save one (Washington County). There are probably a number of reasons why this is true (Abortion, Trump, a younger electorate skewing more to the left, pretty much in that order). But the trend has been there for a couple of election cycles and it is taking hold. (2) Nearly every county with a mid-sized city (by WI standards) went to the D candidate. That was NOT true for either the 2022 election of Ron Johson (R) to the Senate or Tony Evers (D) to the Governorship. In both of those elections last year the Republican took a majority of the counties with mid-sized cities. www.politico.com/… www.politico.com/… So that is a notable shift. (3) Another notable shift from 2022, the D candidate appears to have won in most of the more rural counties of SW Wisconsin. These counties were pivotal in sending a R to the US Congress from the 3rd Congressional District. www.nytimes.com/… These counties could also be the key to taking back the Wisconsin Legislature — and they will be needed with or without redistricting due to the heavy concentration of solid D voters in urban Milwaukee and Dane counties. As I’ve written previously, you cannot draw legislative maps in WI that accurately reflect the majority will due to the previous levels of concentration of voters in urban areas. IF and it is a big IF, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin can continue to appeal to voters in mid-sized cities and rural SW Wisconsin, then there is a realistic path back to the majority, and sooner than later. For the first time in 14 years, I have a sense of optimism about Wisconsin politics.
