John in Ghana- A Brief Update [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-04 I know we all have other things on our minds today (hello NYC) but I wanted to post a brief update of what has been happening in Ghana with my friend John and the others there. It has been a rough week. Some weeks ago, now, John was assaulted, stabbed repeatedly, and then reported to the authorities as the attacker. John was severely injured (I did not realize how badly at the time) and wound up needing medical treatment. For days afterward he was weak and in pain. The medicines the doctor gave him made him even weaker so he spent much of his time sleeping. I don’t want to go into all of the details on this miserable story because I have written about it before and some of it would violate John’s privacy, which I have no right to do. John did wind up having to pay money to get himself free, even though he had photos to prove that he had been the one attacked…. Well, those who revere the law are free to do so. The victim being the one to pay is not that unusual, even in the US, but here we are. At any rate only yesterday we finally managed to get it all resolved and John is now free of all danger of prison. He has gone to the beach to pray and meditate. I am hoping to hear from him later today. Because of his problems John has been mostly out of touch with the others he has been helping. The abandoned three year old girl, Anabel, is always my greatest worry because what would happen to her if the matron of the child care place where she is staying simply turns her out onto the street? But she seems to be okay, at least for now. I think John would have heard if there were problems. Haddi, Zenabu, and their beautiful little baby Vicky are very short on money for the little one, for milk and so forth, but I did manage to get at least a little money to them and hopefully that will tide them over. One of our other babies, Melbourne, needs help but John will have to visit the mother in person to give money and he hasn’t been able to do that. Our other baby, Joyce, her parents are struggling but they seem to be okay at least until we can get help to them. Brother Joshua, the artist, I am worried about. He is homeless on the street and literally, literally, starving. We are hoping to get food money to him as soon as possible. The goal was to get him off the street and into a house this month but because of the expense of keeping John out of prison that is probably just a dream at this stage. But we will try to keep him alive. The orphan Ibrahim, the nine year old who is living under a truck, we haven’t been able to help yet. Likewise Fredric the old man, who is living under an overpass. This last week has gone into survival mode but we will try to get back to the work of keeping our group together as soon as we can. The photo above is of John’s daughter Patience, who is possibly the most beautiful little girl in the world.
