Wastin' Away in Grumpy Trumperville: CBS, Out-Foxing Us All Along? [1]

Not that he was biased, but in February, 2016, CBS’s Les Moonves honked “You cannot live without CBS” in general and “60 Minutes” in particular. Almost in the same breath, he suggested the network he helmed ought to foist wall-to-wall coverage of what he called the “bomb-throwing….circus” of Donald Trump’s campaign.

Granted, he chortled, such a smear-crazed clown show “may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS!”

Really? By such ‘logic,’ we can do without Lady Liberty- but not without Lesley Stahl.

And so, it turns out, we must brook an extra helping of Trump’s Deep South doppelganger du jour. As if MTG had ever let facts get in the way of a vicious smear, Stahl (on 4/2) made bold to inform her that Democrats are not pedophiles.

Lesley, Lesley, Lesley. My grill is not a planetarium. Your tool shed is not Disney World. Trump is an orange scofflaw. That kind of stuff is dull. Verifiable. Nerdy. Viewers crave lies! Smears! Vilification! Twenty-seven months after our democracy almost went belly-up, why do you think your producers fell all over themselves to give a high-profile platform to some crackpot, nasty, incendiary, venom-spewing booster of J6-style sedition (indeed, of J6 itself)?

In 2016- no doubt with CBS’s help- Trump won. In four fraught years, he loosed tens of thousands of public whoppers. Meanwhile, he damned (as “enemies” of America) all media outlets that dared to tell one iota of truth about him.

Now, Greene burbles some bilge to the effect that teaching facts to kids comprises pedophilia. And Stahl rolls her eyes. That’s pretty much she said/she said- and hence, for the Little Big Liar, a signal (if not YUGE) win.

Here’s the thing. Before Covid, computer models showed Big Blonder (Moonves’s pet ringmaster) easily re-upping. In a second term, rather than resort to urging his troop to converge on DC and go “wild” on 1/6/21, Trump could have launched a top-down, incremental overthrow of vote-legitimized governance (in keeping with how, to this day, his party calls J6 “legitimate political discourse”).

Not only was Trump “not...good for America;” he’s damn near been her Grim Reaper.

Aside to Stahl and colleagues: enjoy your pandering, treason-normalizing lucre. Whatever you do, don’t fret about the good of the country. Even if it goes belly-up, you’ll still have your media circus’s safety net. Just please forgive me while I spend the rest of my days getting along nicely without you.
