My Unimagined Niche

Mom was coming home, with a baby. My grandmother had been caring for us -- but I had a big brother, a big sister, and a Springer Spaniel -- Smoky (vacationing on a farm). Being four, going on five, having been the baby all that while, I thought maybe I was getting promoted. I'd never seen adults so abstracted before, for months, but I figured, they'll get back to normal, Smoky will come home, and there would be a baby. I asked my grandmother, where was the baby coming from? she said Jesus is bringing him. I asked where my mother was, and she said the doctor is taking care of her.

Mom was coming home, so I expected a big black car to arrive, driven by the doctor, with mom in the back seat, probably with dad. That made sense, but it occurred to me Jesus would by flying right behind the doctor's car, carrying the baby in the doctor's doctor bag.

They pulled up in a taxi. No doctor, no Jesus. Just a baby.
