[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-05 “Who is Tricia Cotham?” That’s a question that seemed to have been answered last April — or at least given some clarity in a Charlotte Observer Q&A — clarity that she was solidly in line with mainstream Democratic values and frankly mainstream American values. That interview and well her entire campaign, appears to be taking a Santosian turn. She was very clear in 2022 regarding a host of issues… In her interview, she explicitly called out helping NC Democrats make gains in the legislature. She was asked directly about abortion and responded on the need to codify Roe to “assert the right to an abortion without interference.” She noted that: North Carolina should expand Medicaid. I support a clean Medicaid expansion without work requirements or other unnecessary burdens on basic access to health care. She social media posts repeatedly showed her with Democrats, and calling out Democratic policies and causes. Pretty unambiguous, right? Naturally her campaign site also noted policies as well. Tricia Cotham won her district in Charlotte easily. While the future of districts may be murky due to GOP gerrymandering, that wasn’t an issue and her district included a sizeable area of the state’s largest metro. Yet here we are just about 6 months later and news breaks that she’s switching parties. I’ve read some thoughts/theories as to why — she’s upset for being called out for missing votes while sick. I highly doubt that’s it. I do think the missing votes make more sense now though. Her announcement comments reek of corruption and are a bowel movement of typical right wing talking points: "The party wants to villainize anyone who has free thought, free judgement, has solutions and wants to get to work to better our state. Not just sit in a meeting and have a workshop after a workshop, but really work with individuals to get things done. Because that is what real public servants do. If you don't do exactly what the Democrats want you to do they will try to bully you. They will try to cast you aside." What absolute bullshit. I don’t trust the media to get her to reconcile her 2022 beliefs with her 2023 self. I don’t expect the media to get an answer to what policies and “work” she will “get done” with Republicans. I also don’t expect the mainstream to highlight what really happened to show why she flipped. There is a trail to follow no doubt. There is money or a grift, or some combination of things, but this is truly astonishing. Meanwhile, the GOP is salivating at the thought of what it can now do to rape North Carolina.
