A Plea to Reps. Barbara Lee, Katie Porter and Adam Schiff [1]

Let me start by saying I think all three of you are eminently qualified to serve as our next California Senator, and I will be delighted no matter which of you wins the seat. Given that, I am more concerned about a potential slugfest in determining the actual winner than with who is the eventual winner. We all know typical political campaigns involve negative campaigning and massive fundraising expenditures.

Given each of your characters, an agreement to avoid negative campaigning should be easy to confirm and implement. The money issue is a much tougher nut to crack: how to avoid the contest between the three of you becoming a colossal waste of money that could be much better spent helping elect Democrats in other races.

You know better than I what agreements could be made to achieve that goal, whether it be a cap on spending or some other restrictions on fundraising. My plea to you is not to do business as usual in this race, and consider coming together to agree on a different way of proceeding that shows not only respect for each other, but also limits the amount of funds that can be spent by your respective campaigns.

If an agreement turns out not to be possible, it will be up to individual donors to decide where their financial contributions would be best spent. Like most everyone else, I have my personal favorite, but I have decided not to contribute any amount to any candidate in this race until and unless one of you is competing against a Republican.
