Israelis protest Netanyahu’s destruction of democracy. Then Israeli soldiers attack Muslim worshippers at al-Asqa Mosque in Jerusalem. Coincidence? Not likely.

Twenty years ago, Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon instigated the Second Intifada by “visiting” the mosque surrounded by hundreds of riot police. Twenty years before that, the same man played a significant role in the Sabra and Shatila massacre, which killed thousands of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon during the Israeli occupation of that country.

Like Sharon, Netanyahu is an anti-democratic war-monger. He insists that Israeli violence protects Jews worldwide by defending “our” homeland. It is not our homeland; it is stolen land. Violence only stimulates antisemitism, endangering us all.

Meanwhile the US continues to supply Israel with $3 billion in military aid every year. American Jews, warned by our rabbis that criticizing Israel’s violence and apartheid society gives comfort to our enemies, maintain a fearful silence.

The violence continues to kill at least three times as many Palestinians as Israelis. Both sides use an outrageous amount of violence. As an American Jew, I feel special responsibility for the Israeli abuses of power and military might. I abhor this violence and refuse to accept it as being on my behalf. I urge President Biden to sanction Israel. And I urge all Jews to defend the spirit of our religion, not the violence that is stealing its soul, and criticize Israel out loud, and in public.
