Dr. Mushtaq Bilal tells us in a Tweet, quote: “Don’t use ChatGPT for academic research. It creates fake citations to papers that don’t even exist.”

Instead he points using to the Consensus App for research.

Italian authorities have banned the use of ChatGPT over concerns about violations of their data protection laws. In response OpenAI blocked access by Italian users and is proposing some remedies.

The Italian agency, also known as Garante, accused Microsoft Corp-backed OpenAI of failing to check the age of ChatGPT users and the "absence of any legal basis that justifies the massive collection and storage of personal data" to "train" the chatbot. … OpenAI pledged to be more transparent about the way it handles user data and verifies the ages of users, the authority said.

Notice OpenAI did not say they would stop doing the things that Italy is complaining about, just be more upfront about them. The Italian ban remains in place while they study the proposals from OpenAI. Meanwhile, regulatory agencies in other countries are studying whether they should coordinate actions against chatbots.
