Not these kinds of math problems!

Today sub-stack author Diane Francis warns of the dangers of AI in her post, AI and Frankenstein, (paywall). Without thought of profit or death and destruction, I have been using AI to help me with simple math problems.

For example, one YouTube channel shows 1.05 M subscribers. I tried figuring out what 1.05 M would be in a number I would understand. No luck. Finally, I asked AI: one million fifty thousand or 1,050,000. Time saved by AI: days of fruitless hand calculations.

Tuesday, a candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court won by ten points. It was a big win, but I had no idea what ten points meant. I have been trying to figure out what winning by a point meant for a long time. I resorted to AI. A point, I discovered, is one percentage. If one candidate had 50 % of the vote and the other had 40% of the vote, and if each percentage is a point, the winner with 50% would win by ten points. (50% minus 40% is 10%) Ten percent would be ten points. Time saved by AI: clueless months.

I want to turn the comments off. I know, I know. I need to fact-check the above results. I know, I know. Everyone reading this already knows the answers to these problems. I know, I know. I will be a better person and a better learner if I persist in trying to understand without the help of AI. I am weak. You are strong.
