Republicans Actions are "Anti-American" (Stop using Anti-Democratic) [1]

The language used and the initial framing of debate often leads to victory before the battle of ideas has even begun. The Republican party strategists are masters of this art. Years ago they framed the “woman’s right to choose” debate as one of “right to life” versus “abortion”. I’m firmly of the opinion we lost the battle many years ago because of this framing.

We are losing the battle for “small d democracy” because we are framing the the actions of many Republican party partisans as “Anti-Democratic”. Of course, it’s anti-democratic because they are opposed to anything of whic h“Democrats” are in favor. When our talking heads say “anti-small d democratic” any Republican or open minded Republican leaning listener hears this frame of the act of the Republicans as something to which “Democrats” are opposed.

The proper framing should be “Anti-American”. Book banning is “Anti-American”; Expelling members of state legislatures is “Anti-American”: suppressing the vote is “Anti-American, impinging on the personal freedoms of individuals is “Anti-American”.

Those of you, who have access to the thought leaders on our side, please encourage them to frame the Republican actions as being “Anti-American” or “Unconstitutional” or “violative of American values”.
