Teacher accused of humiliating black student during slavery lesson and defending Confederate flag [1]

Tori Ards’s daughter attends Kahla Middle School as an aspirational pupil, taking multiple ninth-grade courses as an eighth-grader. But, being the only Black student in history class can be an unsettling experience if your teacher sympathises with the old Confederacy. The eighth-grader was mortified when her history teacher said that historians had it wrong when they said that the Confederate flag was about slavery and not “states’ rights”. But it did not stop at the teacher deeming the stars and bars as a “good flag”.

Four days later, the eighth-grader was used during a lesson about fugitive enslavement; the lesson affected her mental health and desire to return to school.

I could snatch her and take her to the South and sell her during slavery!

"She (the teacher) went on to further intimidate this young woman by using the analogy with her daughter, about how she could be captured and how the teacher could take her to the south and sell her. She's singling out this young Black student as an example of a slave auction, a slave capture, and a sale," [local Houston activist] Quanell X said. "We have teachers, who are racists and bigots in the classrooms, in charge of the responsibility of shaping and developing young minds and want to rewrite history to desensitize slavery, human bondage, lynching, and deprivation of Black people in America and here in the south." [...] "It's affecting my daughter tremendously. And, of course, consequently affecting me. It's just a very emotionally-charged situation. She's in gifted and talented courses. She's a student-athlete. She's never had disciplinary action. Not to say any student who doesn't have those accolades and abilities deserves to be ostracized because no student does," Ards said.

As the teacher is investigated, the principal of Kahla Middle School released a statement regarding the matter.

I wanted you to know that we have been made aware of allegations involving a staff member and improper role-playing during a social studies lesson. We are thoroughly investigating these allegations, and the staff member will not be on campus prior to the outcome of this investigation. We look forward to a swift resolution to this matter and remain committed to providing a respectful, safe and supportive learning environment for our students. Kahla Middle School is part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. The prominent suburban Houston school district is no stranger to racist controversy, whether it’s students doing the Nazi salute or a board member chastising black teachers for poor academic outcomes.

Some may ask whether the chicken or the egg came first when it comes to whether the education system affects racial views or the other way around.
