Musings for Friday - Tennessee Legislature Moves to Raise State Voting Age to 35 [1]

CJ John Roberts continues to be wrong.

No, my headline isn’t true. At least not yet. But that doesn’t mean that Republicans in our state legislatures haven’t or aren’t thinking about it or other more restrictive voting legislation.

This headline isn’t hyperbolic;

Around the country the GOP majorities in various state legislatures are seeking to lock in their power even as their electoral authority diminishes along with their shrinking number of voters. I’m not telling anyone anything new here on Daily Kos, we’ve been telling each other these things for years. But now we have a new generation of voters waking up and seeing what today’s GOP is doing and sees that today’s GOP wants to do more.

Today’s young voters grew up doing active shooter drills the way the generation that grew up in the ‘50s and ‘60s grew up doing drills that had them ducking under their desk in case of a nuclear attack. The major difference is in today’s world, it’s less likely to be a drill. In the 1950s and ‘60s students weren’t likely to suffer PTSD from having the local sheriff coming in and scaring the shit out of students by tossing around a fake nuclear bomb. Nor did the generation jumping under their desk to avoid a nuclear blast go home and see that in a county 200 miles away a nuclear bomb actually went off.

As dumb as some of the members of these state GOP legislatures may appear, their actions have real life consequences. And their actions are occurring in off years, where they hope that by next years elections the heat that they’re generating now, (they’re hoping) cools off. And they’re partially correct, the glare of the television cameras will be gone. Let’s hope that the passions that they’ve stirred isn’t.
