They decided that, of all the sights and sites, they'd like to finally see the famous Prague Zoo. It does consistently appear in top ten zoo lists, and does great work in helping endangered populations of animals recover— like Przewalski's Horse. They're constantly building new and improving old habitats for their animals, so there's always something new to see. Right inside the main gate is the Red Panda enclosure and, after many visits to the zoo, I finally managed to catch the Red Pandas out and about. Normally they're just a fuzzy orange lump glimpsed through the leaves and branches. Is that it’s head or tail? I think I see an ear— maybe. The big news in the zoo is that, a couple months ago, a baby Pangolin was born, the first Pangolin born in Europe. It was dark in their enclosure and all I managed were a couple blurry photos (no flash of course), but behind this rock you can see little Pine Cone and her mother. Big blurry blob on the right is the scaly back of Mom, facing the camera, but with her head down and not seen. By her side is little Pine Cone, head and one foreleg visible, body also facing the camera, but the head turned towards Mom. Looking closely you can also see both of their tails trailing off into the darkness behind them. Later, Pine Cone took a ride on Mom's tail into a corner of the enclosure where they were no longer seen. I'd never seen a Pangolin before. The River Otters are always able to attract a crowd. Gavial or Gharial, lined with turtles. Prague Zoo has some fantastic bird enclosures. I shared this pic last Saturday with the Bucket Listers. Prague Zoo has been a nesting site for wild Grey Herons since 2011. Guereza The Prague Zoo has a very successful Lowland Gorilla breeding program. Last year they opened a new, massive. gorilla enclosure, adopted a few new gorillas from Spain, Germany and the Netherlands and now the zoo is home to two families of gorilla. Lunchtime for the tigers Another section of the zoo that I always visit is known as Darwin's Crater. Here is where you can find the zoo's Wombat and Tasmanian Devil's. It's a relatively new area, and finally, after about three visits, I finally caught the locals out and about. It was feeding time for the Wombat and a zookeeper gave a little presentation about the types of wombat and their odd, cube-shaped poop. Tasmanian Devil warming itself on a rock on a chilly day in Prague. Thanks for stopping by. This is an open thread.
