Speaker Sexton;

I’m writing this letter not to disparage your decision to urge the Republican supermajority in the lower house of the Tennessee Legislature to expel duly elected Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson for daring to protest gun violence on the chamber floor in the wake of the deadly Covenant School shooting in Nashville on March 27.

You and your Republican colleagues could have censured, fined, or reprimanded Representatives Jones and Pearson or even ignored their protests and focused your efforts on common-sense gun legislation to prevent the murders of more Tennessee school children.

Instead, in a fit of white supremacist pique, you rushed through resolutions to expel Representatives Jones and Pearson, not because they protested, but because they ran for elective office, won, and, despite being black, dared to invade “your” legislature.

However, I’m not writing to disparage you, Speaker Sexton; I’m writing to thank you.

Why?

Because you’ve revealed the depth and breadth of racism in the Tennessee legislature for all the world to see, which will motivate voters in Tennessee and all across the nation to vigorously yet peacefully remove racist politicians from positions of power in counties, states, and Congress.

History will prove that you and your Republican colleagues have unwittingly done more to advance the cause of civil rights than you ever could have imagined.

So, why wouldn’t I thank you?
